Data management, SOC 2 Type 2, and marketing leader to accelerate adoption

It’s been a busy year so far here at Fauna, and today I am thrilled to announce some powerful new features, a milestone on our compliance journey for the service, and the addition of a new marketing leader to the team.

As always these innovations have been driven by feedback from our customers. We now have over 3,700 development teams actively engaged with Fauna that have created over 90,000 databases from 102+ countries around the world. These teams, including those from Santander, Lexmark, Unilever, Everly Health, H&R Block, Insights GG and DTLR are using Fauna to build more sophisticated applications faster, with less code, and are part of Fauna’s community of over 100,000 developers.

These new capabilities build on an already powerful set of features that developers love when it comes to building applications on our distributed document-relational database that we surface as a secure, cloud API.

What is a document-relational database you ask? It’s a database that combines the flexibility and familiarity of JSON documents with the relationships and querying power of a traditional relational database. Fauna offers support for semi-structured data and powerful relational features such as foreign keys, views, and joins. And all of these features are built on, and benefit from, Fauna’s underlying multi-region compute and storage platform.

Rob Sutter, Head of Developer Advocacy, breaks down what a document-relational database is in this 2-minute explainer video.

New data management functionality & SOC 2 type 2

To meet the growing needs of our enterprise development teams, we recently GA’d our data import functionality and have opened up our new backup and restore (and copy) functionality to early access (EA).

Data import enables customers to import sample data or export production data from their existing databases into Fauna as JSON or CSV files. You can import gigabytes of data and define their data types. The new functionality also supports “dry run functionality” to ensure that data is imported successfully.

Backup and restore (now available in early access). enables customers to generate backups of a database, store them and restore from these snapshots, protecting your databases from human errors, logical bugs, and other operational issues. Backup and restore provides daily snapshots and custom retention for snapshots while also allowing you to copy a snapshot from one region to another (i.e. EU to US) – all while maintaining Fauna’s intrinsic serverless and distributed nature.

The early access of backup and restore is available to all of our paying customers so please reach out to us to get started.

Lastly, following on to the announcement of the SOC 2 Type 1 milestone last year, we’re now SOC 2 Type 2 certified. This is a further demonstration of our commitment to the security and privacy of the data that customers store in Fauna and is a result of completing the audit period on the rigorously-tested controls presented in Fauna’s SOC 2 Type I report.

New marketing leadership

I am also excited to welcome John Novak to the team who is joining as our VP of Marketing. John brings over 25 years of experience in customer-centric marketing leadership roles in high growth infrastructure software and SaaS businesses. Previously he was at Hiya, where he was instrumental in developing a hybrid self-service/enterprise business that helped grow the company to 200M+ MAUs and $30M+ in revenue. Prior to Hiya he held marketing leadership roles at Apptio, Microsoft, and Mercury Interactive.

Thank you to all of our customers and partners who have provided feedback and guidance in developing and bringing these new capabilities to market and welcome to the team, John!
